Amazon MGM has unveiled the first trailer for “Project Hail Mary,” the highly anticipated adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel from the team behind “The Martian.” Ryan Gosling leads the cast as Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there – or why he’s lightyears from Earth.
The trailer opens with a disoriented Grace (complete with survival beard) discovering his ship is nearly 12 light years from home. Through flashbacks, we learn Earth’s sun is mysteriously dying along with neighboring stars – except one. Despite his reluctance, Grace’s molecular biology expertise makes him the perfect candidate for a desperate mission to investigate this anomaly and potentially save humanity.
But the real surprise comes when Grace discovers he’s not the only one who had this idea. The trailer offers brief glimpses of an alien ally, though details remain scarce. The film reunites “The Martian” screenwriter Drew Goddard with directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (of “Spider-Verse” fame), suggesting the same perfect blend of hard science and humor that made Weir’s first adaptation so successful.
With a supporting cast including Sandra Hüller and Milana Vayntrub, “Project Hail Mary” is shaping up to be one of 2026’s most exciting sci-fi releases. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 20, 2026.
